Oil On Their Hands
After decades of devastating contamination, Indigenous federations filed a complaint against the oil company Pluspetrol with the OECD National Contact Point (NCP) in the Netherlands. The complaint sought accountability for and remediation of oil pollution that has ravaged over 25 Achuar, Kichwa, and Quechua communities in the north of the Peruvian Amazon.
After five years the Dutch NCP concluded that Pluspetrol had failed to comply with multiple obligations and recommended urgent measures, including remediation of polluted sites. The findings render Pluspetrol ineligible for Dutch government support, including export credits, trade promotion and public contracts.
The findings also highlight the systemic impunity of extractive companies and their practices of evading social and environmental obligations.
‘Oil On Their Hands’ was created to support the complaint filing in 2020, for decision makers to see and hear the communities affected by the pollution. It was shown at the opening hearing with the OECD, with leaders from the communities in attendance, and was awarded an Honorable Mention at the Jackson Wild Media Awards.
